Welcome back to Fox Richmond and DigitalSports!

Stephen Lewis back with you as Meadowbrook leads J.R. Tucker 17-8 going into the second period.

Meadowbrook’s defensive aggressiveness is taking over the contest so far. Let’s see what transpires.

SECOND QUARTER

Matt Camfield buries a 3-pointer for Tucker. The Tiger fans are showing life.

Meadowbrook now holds a 32-18 lead. Harry West is trying to convert a three-point play, he misses. 3:45 to go in the half, right when Camfield hits a 3-pointer.

Darrin James is playing big again inside, 11-point lead for Meadowbrook.

Until Marvin King-Davis finishes inside, back to 13 points for Meadowbrook. Now a steal, West is on fire! He hits from the FT line.

James Bazemore answers as the pace has picked up significantly.

Tucker with two fastbreak buckets in a row, Montre Carr and Camfield. Timeout MBK, 1:42 to go.

Tucker made a great comeback, down 3 at half, 38-35.

THIRD QUARTER

Chase Desgain
buries a jumper as Tucker takes its first lead, 39-38! 6:41 to go with King-Davis going to the FT line.

Tucker up two now as Camfield gets loose for two.

Action has picked up, Harry West with four straight points. Tucker turns it over under pressure, down four points, 49-45, 4:03 left.

MBK is now ahead 51-47, 2:25 to go. Camfield is at the line, he’s been slicing up MBK’s paint all night. Misses the first. Hits the second, Tucker down three.

Deshawn Morman gets into the action, burying a floater for MBK. Jaquan Daily answers Tre Caiby‘s two with three, MBK up six.

Karsene Denard, the 3-point champ, getting it done defensively with the steal and finish. Camfield answers, then West gets fouled, .7 left.

One of two FTs are good, MBK is ahead 59-52 going into the fourth.

FOURTH QUARTER

Caiby is at the line, trying to cut MBK’s lead to three. He does, 61-58 MBK, 5:55 and counting.

Meadowbrook is ahead 70-62 now, almost three minutes left. Daily just scored off a feed from West.

Camfield knocks in two FTs to keep the pressure on.

Zach Desgain now at the line, he hits two as Tucker is down 72-68. 1 minute left.

There will be a sea of Monarchs going to the line soon. Tucker only has five fouls and is trying to force MBK into the bonus.

MBK wins 78-71, second straight tournament title!

BLOG

Welcome back to DigitalSports!

Stephen Lewis, senior editor, back with you again. It is insane in Henrico’s gymnasium right now.

Patrick O’Connor and Freeman are going nuts in the final semifinal, up 24-10 on Meadowbrook.

O’Connor has nailed three treys already – he’s in the 3-point contest by the way – and has 11 points through seven minutes.

The Rebels are playing with tremendous intensity, trying to take Meadowbrook’s Henrico Tourney crown. Stay here to get the low down on what’s going on.

Freeman leads 26-11 after one period.

SECOND QUARTER

Meadowbrook is turning the ball over left and right. Freeman’s already in the bonus, Justin Mann just missed the front end of a one-and-one with 7:00 to go.

The Monarchs are showing life behind Devin Morman, he has all six points in this period for the Monarchs who trail 26-17 at the 6:25 mark.

Marvin King-Davis gets loose inside, uh-oh, here comes MBK!

Jaquan Daily gets big in the paint off a feed from KD, 28-23 Freeman. But fouls are hurting the Monarchs, Mann goes back to the line.

Let’s see…he misses the front end. Freeman is headed back to the line after a nice drive from Philip Rohrer. He drops in both FTs, Freeman 30-23, 4:13 to go in the first half.

What a comeback, Andrew Simmons drops in a 3-pointer from the left corner as Meadowbrook climbs within two points, 34-32.

35 seconds and counting, Mann stalling, trying to get last shot of half.

Rohrer misses a layup, Mann takes another charge. I think that’s three for him in the first half, WOW!

Rohrer makes up for it off a feed from O’Connor, 36-32 going to the half. Whoa, what a nice game so far. Best of the tournament yet.

Rohrer leads Freeman with 15 points, O’Connor still has his 11. For MBK, King-Davis has 10 points.

Stick and stay for more action!

THIRD QUARTER

Daily scores inside again, 39-36 Freeman with 5:21 to go in the third.

Rohrer at the line, puts in his 16th point. Another goes in, 17 points for Philip Rohrer as Freeman is up five.

Mann knocks in a jumper for Freeman, 43-36 as the Rebels try to reach another double-figure lead. No says Harry West, a beautiful drive and lay.

Mann is being physical with the drive and getting calls. All of MBK’s little guards are in foul trouble. Well, all of MBK is. King-Davis just picked up his third foul.

4:13 to go, Rohrer at the line, hits another. And another, lead back to seven, 45-38.

This is crazy, Mann draws another foul. Freeman is already in the bonus, 3:41 to go in the THIRD PERIOD. WOW, big problem for MBK.

He hits the front end, and the back end. Nine-point lead.

Down to six, as West hit a three for a 3-point deficit, but Rohrer came back with an old-fashioned three. Daily cleans up his own mess and Meadowbrook is back in business, down four, 52-48 with one quarter left.

FOURTH QUARTER

Rohrer is a monster, he scores inside. That’s 24 points for him, a game-high by far.

It’s 62-51 now, 4:55 left. Daily is at the line. MBK needs these. Bonus one is off, Freeman takes control, in double-bonus.

8-0 run by MBK, Harry West caught fire. He drops in a nice layup and gets fouled. The FT is good, nine-point run. DF 62-60 with 3:05 to go.

Mann is fouled, he’s at the line. First is good. By the way, Rohrer is 11-11 at the charity stripe. Mann gets both, 64-60.

That was the quickest 6-0 run I’ve ever seen! Meadowbrook with its first lead of the game, 66-64 with 2:14 to go. If you aren’t here you missed a treat.

No worries though, I’ll have video of this classic up tonight!

Mann hits two FTs. He’s 9 for 12 for the game, 16 points total. The Rebs need him to score to be as potent as they can be. 2:09 to go, tied at 66.

Now tied at 68. Tough call on Freeman, King-Davis to the line. The first is off.  26 seconds left, second is good!

Freeman races up, O’Connor launches a trey, no good. West to the line with 14 seconds, misses the first. AND THE SECOND, but Jaymon Tucker is there for the offensive rebound and puts it in.

Timeout Freeman with 7 seconds to go. Coach Larry Parpart probably drew something up for Rohrer or O’Connor for trey. Let’s see.

Andrew Simmons steals the inbounds pass, Deshawn Morman runs the clock out, MBK going back to the final, 71-68!

(804) 240-2191

Meadowbrook ended the contest on an 8-0 run to dispatch of Atlee 60-53 in the second annual Midlothian Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

The Monarchs were paced by 23 points from Briana Arrington, and 11 from Torie Cunningham.

Cunningham nabbed the free throws down the stretch that sealed the deal for the Monarchs.

Atlee, ranked seventh in the preseason DigitalSports Top 10, got a game-high 28 points from Britt Hill.

Taylor Henderson chipped in with 16 points as Atlee had only seven players. Eight are currently on the roster.

It was slim showings for tryouts as only 15 girls came out for both the varsity and JV combined.

The Monarchs will get a rematch with Highland Springs, the No. 3 team. The Springers topped host Midlothian 65-60 to gain a final berth Saturday at 4 p.m. at Midlothian High School.

Meadowbrook, which lost 55-36 against the Springers Wednesday, will have to cut down on its total of 25 turnovers in the last matchup to be successful.

Boys hoops Top 10, 12/1/09

Boys basketball
Preseason Top 10

1. John Marshall – 08-09 (state semifinalist, Central Region finalist, Colonial District champion)
* The Justices lost some seasoned firepower, but still have Wake Forest-bound Travis McKie. Tahir Little can flat-out run the point-guard spot. Watch out for a slew of newcomers, including Willie Mangum.

2. Meadowbrook – 08-09 (region quarterfinalist)
* The Monarchs have three starters back (Andrew Simmons, Andre Coble and Jaquan Daily). Two newcomers bolster this lineup, former Varina 6-6 big man Marvin King-Davis and guard Harry West, a sharpshooter who played as a sophomore. Talent is there to win an ultra-tough Central District.

3. Thomas Dale – 08-09 (region quarterfinalist)
* Did I say ultra-tough? The Knights have four starters back, including 6-5 Andrew White and 6-4 Malcolm King. How quickly can Ariek Green get into football shape is a question mark. Coach Eddie Goss likes several newcomers, including transfer Michael Eaton.

4. Petersburg – 08-09 (state semifinalist, Central Region and Central District champion)
* The Wave waved goodbye to dynamite seniors, Cadarian Raines, Chris Evans, Drejon Scott and Chris Moore, to name four. The cupboard is not bare. Look for DuVaughn Maxwell to be a force. Frank Mason got quality time as a freshman PG last season. Kevin Green and Quinton Spain will bring their football toughness to the hardwood. What a tough district.

5. Highland Springs – 08-09 (region semifinalist, Capital District champion)
*
Another year, another new lineup. The Springers have shooters galore, led by Jarvis Threatt, Darryl Lewis and Javon Jones. Marcel Crump transferred over from Varina. Volleyball star Quentin Moore joins the group and adds some height to go with beefy Derrick Hopkins. Coach George Lancaster doesn’t see what he wants early, though.

6. Cosby – 08-09 (region qualifier)
* The biggest team in the region is pitted here. Abundant scorer David Robinson, a Longwood signee, leads a promising group that showed well in the Dominion District tournament last season. Matt Gorski (6-11), his brother Nick (6-6), Zach Floyd (6-8), Daniel Virak (6-6) and Zach Roman (6-6) provide a college-sized front line. Guard play may be key, as talented freshman Nick Coppola will see extensive action and has looked good in the preseason.

7. L.C. Bird – 08-09 (region quarterfinalist)
* Some terrific players are gone, but firepower remains. Ken Pankey is one of the most deadly shooters in the area. Anthony Harris is coming off of a football injury. How soon will he be ready? Skyhawks will be usual scrappy selves, playing a full-court game.

8. Douglas Freeman – 08-09 (region quarterfinalist)
* You have to look for a drop off when you lose two Division I players like the Rebels did. But don’t forget about DF. Junior Justin Mann is a solid PG, in his third year starting. Philip Rohrer is as tough as it gets on the wing, and look out for 6-4 Patrick O’Connor. The Rebels also have a young, athletic team that will play some tough defense.

9. Hopewell – 08-09 (region qualifier)
* The Blue Devils were young last year and still made noise. The leader will be junior Pedro Berrios, a preseason all-DigitalSports pick at 6-4. David Rose and David Gholson are guards who can get it done.

10. Henrico – 08-09 (region semifinalist)
* What could have been. The Warriors had preseason No. 1 written all over them until Trey Davis transferred to Benedictine, and Justin Coleman departed to Huntington Prep in West Virginia. Coach Vance Harmon still has talent, led by Kris Walden. Look out for freshman guard Timmy Jones. Evan Thorpe has a year under his belt playing small in the trenches.

Others to watch
Benedictine – They’d be No. 1 if allowed in the Central Region rankings. Loaded everywhere. Trey Davis, Michael Gbinije, R.J. Price, Kevin Gill and Erik Moody are all college-bound, scholarship-type players.
CollegiateJake McGee lights up scoreboards in football and basketball.
Deep Run – Senior PG Jay Johnson needs to step to the fore for coach Rally Axselle.
HermitageMicah Thomas is back for a sophomore year after putting in 15 per contest as a freshman.
J.R. Tucker – The Tigers can field a senior-laden lineup featuring Chase and Zach Desgain (junior), Trevone Caiby (6-5), Matt Camfield and Jabari Nesbitt.
Mills Godwin – Coach Hunter Thomas looks to have four 3-point shooters on the floor. Dangerous team to play against if those bombs are going down.
VarinaQuVaughn Jones leads one of the youngest teams in the area.
