Boys basketball, 12/29: Meadowbrook takes race

Meadowbrook wants to run, run and run some more.

On Monday night, so did Hermitage.

It turned the game into a full-court, press-you-press-me race that Meadowbrook won 69-57 to take the Henrico Holiday Hoops tournament.

The more athletic Monarchs loved the break-neck style and two Monarchs excelled in different periods.

Sterling Martin took advantage in the second. He scored 15 of Meadowbrook’s 21 points on an array of moves, mostly jumpers from the much-improved shooter.

He had two of his team’s three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points.

“I had to take over,” Martin said. “I saw the score getting a little lopsided, my team was looking a little down so I had to take it into my own hands, make a few plays and do what I had to do to help my team get back in the game.”

Teammate Doug Brewer did the same thing in the fourth period. Up 42-36 going into the final eight minutes, he scored nine straight points to answer Hermitage scores, a few from freshman Micah Thomas (15 points).

Brewer, after not scoring in the first half and only hitting three points in the third, had 14 points in the deciding quarter to tie Martin for the team- and game-lead of 17 points.

“Coach [Ksaan Brown] talked about stop rushing it and go to the basket,” Brewer said. “He always talks about team work and that’s what pulled off the victory.”

The Panthers, who won the Henrico title last season, came as close as six points down the stretch but the Monarchs held them off with their relentless drives to the basket.

Take tourney MVP Andrew Simmons (10 points).

With two minutes left, he received an outlet pass and instead of pulling the ball back with his team up seven points, he drove to the basket for an old-fashioned three-point play that put Meadowbrook up 10.

“We scrimmaged them before the season started and we knew they were very athletic,” Hermitage coach Joe Coulter said. “Tonight they were just a little bit better than we were. We played great all tournament, we got two big wins.”

Hermitage snapped a four-game losing streak during the tournament and played its sixth straight game without captain and leading scorer Manny Winston. He should return in 2009 as his cracked collarbone is close to 100 percent.

The Panthers received 11 points for Herman Kinard and nine from Jermaine Walters.

But it was Meadowbrook’s night.

“I think we kind of pulled them out of their style,” said Brown, in his first year as head man at Meadowbrook. “I don’t think they wanted to play that pace, that’s our pace. I kept telling my guys if we can get them to play our pace, we should come out with the win.”

Week in girls hoops, 12/8

* Raiders Hit Stride: Atlee had a tough first half against Hanover. But the next 10 quarters have been pretty good.

The Raiders took the Midlothian tournament, topping Colonial Heights and downing Capital District mate Highland Springs by 10.

Sydney Henderson, Richelle Price and Britt Hill are on top of their games right now.

If Taylor Henderson, Taylor Ashcraft and others can be consistent, the Raiders will be very tough.

* Dominion Still Ridiculous: L.C. Bird and Monacan jousted as the Skyhawks came out with a 50-46 victory.

It’s only a sign that the Dominion District is still super tough. Cosby has extraordinary talent led by U.Va. commit Jazmin Pitts.

Midlothian, Manchester and Huguenot – with new coach and former Falcons star Bo Jones Jr. – are no slouch, either.

* Capital Not Far Behind: Don’t overlook the Northside’s toughest district.

The Capital has potential with Atlee, Hanover, Henrico and Highland Springs. Atlee is the district favorite, but your guess is as good as mine as to who will finish second.

The trio all have talent, like Hanover with Chelsea Coward (Longwood) back and Kim Browning (UMBC), both Division I signees.

Highland Springs boasts Dashon Ross, a Norfolk State recruit. Kyra Coleman just dropped 27 points and Takeisha Jeffries is a shooter from outside.

Never discount the Warriors’ run-and-gun style, especially since Elaine Derricott is available the whole semester.

* Surprise, Surprise: Patrick Henry is 2-0 heading into a bout with Mills Godwin Tuesday, the Colonial favorite.

Sophomore guard Taylor Huber had 37 points against JM and then 21 in an upset of Deep Run. Katie Anderson led the Patriots in the OT win over the Wildcats with 30 points. Oh, she’s a freshman.

Former PH star and coach Leslie Nuckols has a young, but good team on her hands.

The Eagles, with new coach Mark Seidenberg back on an Eagles basketball sideline, look good early with solid wins over Manchester and Henrico, two top 10 contenders.

* Wave Back: It’s been a few years since Petersburg was a dominant girls team, but they may be on their way back after a narrow, one-point loss to Meadowbrook in the opener.

Coach Robert Claiborne‘s team could be in the mix with Thomas Dale, who has yet to play a game, and the aforementioned Monarchs.

* Private Power: Trinity Episcopal is 3-1 on the young season, falling to Hampton Roads Academy in its own tournament championship.

Jill Brown and Victoria Smith have led the way.

Until next week …

Week in boys hoops, 12/8

* Freeman’s Legit: As a few DigitalSports fans said in the preseason questionnaire, watch out for Douglas Freeman.

The Rebels took their own title defeating Highland Springs 62-51 in Saturday’s championship. Tournament MVP Josh Brinkley put in 14 points, while sharpshooter Jake Eastman poured in 16.

Freeman had to top defending Rebel Invitational champion Benedictine in the semifinals, winning 75-68 over the Cadets, who took third place.

With Brinkley, Eastman, Billy Giles (12 in the final), Philip Rohrer (10) and a more-than-solid bench, the Rebels are more than competition for Colonial District favorite John Marshall.

* Panthers Rolling: We may have to throw Hermitage into the Colonial District hat. Freshman guard Micah Thomas has been sensational so far, putting in almost 17 per game, including 22- and 23-point efforts for the Panthers.

Hermitage has a good mixture with several experienced players like seniors Manny Winston and 6-6 Herman Kinard. Tuesday should be interesting, as Hermitage will visit Freeman at 7:45 p.m.

* Contenders Look Good: Defending Central Region champion John Marshall, region runner-up Petersburg, Huguenot and Highland Springs look good so far.

JM blew out Patrick Henry in its only contest, while Petersburg handled Manchester. The Falcons are 2-0 winning their games by almost 35 per contest.

Thomas Jefferson transfer Juan Wilson seems to have bolstered an already talented Huguenot lineup coach by former-but-new coach Bo Jones Sr.

* Performances of Note: L.C. Bird’s Rico Ferguson, a reigning all-DigitalSports pick, almost had a triple-double in the Rebel Invitational fifth-place game.

Ferguson registered 14 assists and 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Prince George is off to a 3-0 start, taking the Midlo tourney. Tyler Johnson and Treon Claiborne are playing well early.

Dale is also 2-0, with a tough win over Group A power Chesterfield Community.

* Congrats!: Hanover’s Troy Manns, Varina’s Matt McKeag and Deep Run’s Rally Axselle, Meadowbrook’s Ksaan Brown, Bird’s Chuck Thomas, Monacan’s Bill Roberson and James River’s Tracy Hamner got their first wins at their new spots. The Rapids are 2-1.

Until next week…
