Close losses spur Monarchs

A loss is a loss.

No matter how it happens or by what margin, a mark goes in the right-hand column the same way.

But the way Meadowbrook’s football team got two losses last year will stick in your craw until you have the opportunity to do something about it.

In 2006, the Monarchs fell to two Central District foes, Thomas Dale (14-13) and Petersburg (22-21) by a single point.

Meadowbrook finished 6-4.

Had those games went their way, an 8-2 record could’ve had them in a battle with Highland Springs for the final playoff spot in Division 6.

Just two points may have turned the whole season around.

Meadowbrook coach Bill Bowles, 8/13/07

Meadowbrook coach Bill Bowles looks forward to 2007.
“The kids know that,” Monarchs coach Bill Bowles said. “They are aware of that, too. But these things happen sometimes.”

And a boatload of players return to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The whole offensive line returns, including Lee Blakley and Rashaun Onyango.

Bowles believes that should be the team’s strong point.

The line will open holes for fullback Bryant Frazier and running back Torrean Crowell, among others.

Sophomore Desmond Coble is back under center as Bowles looks through a bunch of gifted receivers for a main target on the outside.

Mike Williams should control the middle from his tight end spot.

“We could have something if [Coble] matures,” Bowles said, “We’re looking for a split end right now. If we can stay healthy, we can compete with anybody.”

Defensively, Williams is moved from defensive end to middle linebacker, for now.

Torrean Crowell is in his third year in Meadowbrook’s offensive backfield.
Frazier is moving down the line from end to nose tackle, for now.

Bowles will have to see how that works out in the preseason before making the moves permanent.

Both of their units should be very solid.

The unit that Bowles is most concerned about is the secondary.

The Monarchs lost their entire secondary in Le’Troy Alexander, Jonathan Wade and Brandian Ross, who are all playing college football right now.

“We were pretty steady back there,” Bowles said.

Crowell will fill one of those spots.

The Monarchs also lost kicker Billy Rudd, a four-year starter.

Bowles should be able to find a replacement. In 2004 the Monarchs won the Central Region and state titles in Division 5 with 33 players.

Now the Monarchs have 28 seniors on the team, only five less than their team three seasons ago.

Times have changed as Meadowbrook is knocking on 2,000 students.

“We’ve only got a few swing players,” Bowles said. “We can rotate our linemen and spell some kids up front. We almost have enough to have a separate offense and defense, that’s the next step.”
