Girls basketball, 2/23: Meadowbrook moves on

by Bryan Whitton
Manchester H.S. Intern

Before the game, Meadowbrook honored one of their players, Crystal Smith.

Smith had set the all-time school scoring record for girls basketball with over 1,300 career points.

An emotional Smith would have an outstanding game, scoring a game-high 35 points and leading her team past the Lady Lancers 76-62 on Monday night in the first round of the Central Region tournament.

The game started off very fast-paced. Both teams ran the floor very well and tried for the quick baskets.

Meadowbrook, in particular, did a great job of spreading the ball around to keep the Lancer defense moving and off guard, which led to open shots and easy points.

Smith led her team in assists with five.

On the other end of the floor, the Monarch defense played a 2-3 zone in an attempt to stop Manchester’s best player Porche’ Bentley.

But just like a star is supposed to, Bentley stepped up to the challenge. She finished the game with 17 points and a staggering 16 rebounds. Bentley also did her job at the foul line, going 9 for 11.

Her leadership was truly shown in this game, whether it was hustling for the ball, drawing fouls or making sure her team was in the right position.

The game stayed close for the majority of the time, the Monarchs only led by seven at the end of a very low scoring first half.

The third quarter showed them extend the lead slightly up to 11 with a score of 46-37, but the fourth quarter held the most offensive action of the game.

In what may have been an act of desperation, Manchester coach Jerry Gibbs instructed his girls to begin intentionally fouling the Monarchs with five minutes left in the quarter and the Lady Lancers trailing by 12.

The strategy, which is typically saved for later in the fourth quarter when the score is close, backfired terribly on Manchester.

Although they managed to score an impressive 25 points in the quarter, Manchester just couldn’t overcome Meadowbrook’s outstanding free throw shooting, especially coming from their star Smith.

Manchester just couldn’t keep it close enough, and the Monarchs walked away with the victory.

Girls basketball, 2/20: Firsts for Thomas Dale

by Stephen M. Lewis

PETERSBURG – Don’t go too far back, just recent Thomas Dale past will do.

From track and field standouts like Alex Tatu and Dennis Boone, to title-taking football, softball, soccer, field hockey and boys basketball teams, the Knights’ athletic program is pretty special.

Then there is girls basketball. Unbelievably, there were no trophies to shine or dust off in the history of the program.

Now there are a few and maybe more to come, as Dale captured the Central District tournament crown holding off a game Meadowbrook team 53-49 Friday night at Petersburg High School.

The way the contest was progressing, it didn’t look like Dale wouldn’t couple a tournament crown with the regular-season one it clinched what seemed to be ages ago.

After taking a 30-25 lead to the break, the Monarchs won the third period 16-8 behind stellar play from flashy and focused point guard Crystal Smith.

Smith (game-high 21 points, 10 in the second period) scored five points and dished out an assist as the Monarchs took the momentum.

A deep 3-pointer, Smith’s fifth of the game, gave Meadowbrook a 39-37 lead.

“[Mike] Knight‘s a good coach,” Thomas Dale coach Kevin Coffey said. “He came out with a good gameplan. We were fortunate enough to keep our head. We made some huge shots at some big times.”

Andrea Hobbs (11 points) scored four straight points as the lead seesawed back to Dale.

Then sensational sophomore Ka’lia Johnson (team-high 16 points) split the lane for an old-fashioned three-point play as Dale led 47-43 for the most breathing room it had since it won the first quarter 21-10.

Katrina Marks answered with a bucket of her own for Meadowbrook, but Alyssa Frye (12 points) followed a Dale miss to get the four-point advantage back.

Taylor Bradley knocked in four free throws down the stretch to hold off a Monarchs team Knight has been looking for all season.

“It took a whole year to get them going,” said Knight, as his Monarchs will host Manchester Monday at 7 p.m. in one of the Central Region’s most interesting first-round games. “For how our season went, I’m happy we’re playing good basketball now.”

So is Coffey, as his Knights moved to 23-1 with 17 wins over district foes and two titles to show for it.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Coffey said. “It’s been long overdue at Dale. Everybody’s enjoying the ride.”

Meadowbrook 10 15 16 8 – 49
Thomas Dale  21  9  8 15 – 53
Meadowbrook (15-10): Smith 21, Forrest 2, Cunningham 2, Ka. Marks 2, Coleman 8, Arrington 0, Hatcher 14. Totals: 19 4-8 49. 3-point goals: Smith 5, Coleman 2.
Thomas Dale (23-1): Frye 12, Sweeney 0, Johnson 16, Williams 4, Hobbs 11, Scott 4, Bradley 6. Totals: 21 8-11 53. 3-point goals: Frye 2, Hobbs.

Region wrestling, 2/15: Rapids outlast Hawks

by Derek “Big D” Nash
DigitalSports Contributor

In a weekend where you would think the James River Rapids were going to run away with the Central Region wrestling tournament title, the Hanover Hawks put plenty of pressure on the Rapids.

But in the end the Rapids still prevailed as the Team Champs!!!

Going into Saturday night’s finals, Hanover had to win several individual titles to take away the team trophy from the Rapids.

After Spencer Alexander and Gabe Lavey won the 103- and 125-pound titles, respectively, it looked as if the Hawks had a good chance of taking it all. Then on came the Rapids!!

Jordan Dix and Jared Anongos won back-to-back titles at 130 and 135 to secure the championship.

Anongos beat Hawks standout Ben Wilson in front of a packed house.

I have to give credit to Wilson. He came out from the get go and didn’t back down from Anongos, who won his fourth region Title. This was Dix’s third Title.

Earlier in the day, Anongos wrestled Josh Clark (Matoaca) in what was a much-anticipated semifinal between two state-ranked opponents.

Anongos came out on top 2-1, which became the biggest topic of the day, in what figured to be a low scoring affair where both wrestlers were waiting on the other one to make a mistake.

With the score 0-0 after the first period Clark won the coin toss and chose down to start the second. His escape gave him a 1-0 lead going into the third period because both wrestlers stayed neutral the rest of the second period.

Clark was warned for stalling and then Anongos was given a point for a second stalling call on Clark, which brought out a nasty war from the crowd. Clark then decided to let Anongos up, which put Anongos up 2-1, in hopes that he would take him down.

That didn’t happen and after a positive/negative emotional war from the crowd the two wrestlers shook hands, hugged and walked off the mat.

The finals had some really good matches to entertain the crowd.

In round four of Cody Allala (Hopewell) and Blake Roulo (Matoaca) at 145 pounds was again supposed to be the match everyone had been waiting for. The match again didn’t disappoint as Allala won the bout 4-0.

A majority of his points came on a 3-point near fall late in the second period as he tilted Roulo onto his back. A third period escape by Allala gave him the 4-0 lead and the victory.

Allala’s brother Clint won the 160-pound title by pinning Zach Burholder of Clover Hill. The pin was the only pin of the finals.

Matt Brunke (Mills Godwin) held on to beat Cosby standout Austin Coburn 4-3 as Coburn was trying to turn Brunke late in the match for some near fall points, but couldn’t finish the turn.

Finally, the 285 bout was a rematch of last weekend’s Central District final between LaRoyce Lewis (Prince George) and Cam Granderson (Hopewell). Granderson won the district title 4-2 over Lewis, but this time it was Lewis prevailing 3-2 for the regional title.

GREAT MATCHES FROM ALL THESE GUYS!!!

In a weekend full of surprises, upsets and emotions I have to say that the Central Region tournament did not disappoint.

Next weekend is the big weekend as all 56 Central Region wrestlers who qualified carry their headgear to states in hopes of big dreams. I feel as if we can have an outstanding end to such a great year.

GOOD LUCK CENTRAL REGION!

Side note: I want to personally thank everyone for all their kind words and prayers that they said to me over the weekend and on the centralregionwrestling.net forum. I’m looking forward to having this gastric bypass and again THANK YOU CENTRAL REGION.

Morgan Moses, Meadowbrook

MORGAN MOSES
Meadowbrook Monarchs

Morgan Moses was tough to find after the season, playing in high school all-star games all over the United States.

On the gridiron, you couldn’t miss him. The senior 6-8, 335-pound tackle destroyed defenders for the Monarchs.

Now he’s on his way to the University of Virginia, which is turning into an NFL haven for offensive linemen.

D’Brickshaw Ferguson, Branden Albert and Eugene Monroe (2009 draft) have or will be high first-round picks in the past few years.

Can Moses follow suit?

Derek Tinsley, Meadowbrook

DEREK TINSLEY
Meadowbrook Monarchs

The left side of Meadowbrook’s offensive line had perhaps the best offensive lineman in the nation on it in Morgan Moses.

But Derek Tinsley wasn’t chopped liver. The 6-0, 285-pound guard helped Moses blow open holes for a myriad of backs and gave Desmond Coble plenty of time to work his magic.

He also stood out at defensive tackle for Meadowbrook, but is needed at guard on this team, where he was a first-team all-state pick.

“I think defensive tackle was my favorite because I got many awards for that,” Tinsley said. “In my previous years I haven’t shown that I can play much D, but I’m glad my senior year I showed that I can play some D.”

Desmond Coble, MBK

DESMOND COBLE
Meadowbrook Monarchs

A wispy 14-year-old made a buzz taking the reins of a Meadowbrook offense as a freshman.

He ran around and made plays, mostly with his legs.

Two seasons later, Desmond Coble was doing the same things, just much better.

Coble, a lefty, found his arm, striking for 1,553 yards and 16 scores, but still had his legs, running for 1,082 yards and 12 TDs.

He also converted three interceptions from his safety spot, returning one to paydirt. And, there’s good news and bad news.

The good news, Coble will return next season (last year Monarchs!). The bad news, Coble will return next season (sorry Central District).
