Track & Field, 5/27/10: Dale, Atlee triumph

Thomas Dale’s girls and Atlee’s boys took the Central Region outdoor track and field titles by wide margins Thursday at Sports Backers Stadium.

The girls competition was won by the depth of the Knights, who had only two event winners, Kortney Williams (shot put) and April Wilson (400).

But Dale got points in nine of the 17 events to pull away, racking up 75 points, 55 without Williams and Wilson’s wins.

Sarah Fulgham and Katea Jemmott tore it up in jumps and sprints, and Kristen Greene doubled up on fourth-place finishes in the throws.

Second was Patrick Henry, led by Lizzie Powell, who beat her own meet record of 12-1 with a vault of 12-3, though she wanted to go 12-9.

“I had just finished running in the 4X100 relay,” said Powell, who ran a terrific second leg on the third-place team. “So my legs are a little worn out from that.”

The Patriots nipped fellow Colonial District member Deep Run 51.5 to 51, but it was Dale’s day, its first girls region track title.

On the boys side, Atlee claimed its second region crown in the school’s 19-year history. It wasn’t close, either.

The Raiders posted 79 points, 20 over Dale and Quintin Fulgham, the long, triple jump, 100 and 200 champion.

Atlee got it done it’s the usual way with terrific depth, and domination in the pole vault. The Raiders put up 19 points in the event alone to offset Fulgham’s unbelievable individual performance.

The senior had Dale up one point with a few events to go, but the Raiders’ depth was too much.

Atlee got wins from its 3,200-meter relay team and Marques Atkinson in the 300 hurdles.

Highland Springs finished third with 51 points, Cosby a close fourth with 50.5.

Boys soccer, 5/25/10: Matoaca 5, MBK 1

Call Mason Page Lightning.

He struck twice in 45 seconds to catapult Matoaca to a 5-1 boys soccer victory over Meadowbrook in the Central District semifinals Tuesday.

“They definitely were in control of the game at the beginning of the game,” Warriors coach Corey McConville said. “Once we got those two goals we were able to get them on their heels.

“But again, it was a battle in the second half.”

Meadowbrook coach Justin Beck, out of ideas to halt Page, flat out double-teamed the ODU-bound forward in the second half.

It stopped Matoaca’s momentum until Nathan Calhoun found Ryan Clapman on a free kick for a 3-0 lead halfway through the second half.

“I just got that ball over the top and knew I was going to volley it over the keeper,” Clapman said.

Meadowbrook, ever resilient, converted a corner kick with 12 minutes to go.

Noe’ Quintanilla wasn’t stood up in the box by Matoaca, and beat Spencer Koch as the Monarchs’ crowd had life.

But Page got back at it in the open field.

He blasted a shot at MBK keeper Diego Velasco, who got one of his six saves, but it bounced out to Brandon Parker, who smartly followed Page’s shot.

Page wouldn’t miss with four minutes left. The ball seemed to be heading out of bounds behind the net, but Page saved it and maneuvered through three Monarchs to deposit his third goal.

“All I can say is, look out at regionals,” Beck said of Page. “This guy is a phenomenal player. He really can decide what’s going to happen in the game in any moment.

“If he’s up and he’s playing at the top of his game, he’s going to be one of the toughest people to mark.”

Mat: Page 3, Clapman, Parker

Michael Robinson Camp, 5/22/10

The favorite son returned with friends and free tutelage.

Over 500 football youths took part in Michael Robinson‘s 1st Excel 2 Excellence Football Camp Saturday at Varina High School.

Robinson was an all-everything player at the school before going on to star at Penn State, and now is a running back and special teams dynamo for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

Robinson, about to enter his fifth season in the league, was noticeably excited about the turnout.

“It kind of feels like it’s 2000,” Robinson said, “and we’ve won another region championship.”

Exactly 509 players participated in the camp from ages 10 to a rising high-school senior.

Philadelphia Eagle and former Highland Springs and Virginia Tech star Macho Harris took part in the camp, as well as Robinson’s 49er teammates Josh Morgan and Manny Lawson.

Elite coaches in the Richmond area also provided tips for the students, like Highland Springs coach Loren Johnson, Varina’s Stu Brown, Meadowbrook’s Troy Taylor, former Huguenot coach Richard McFee, Hanover’s Josh Just and many others.

“We’re just here basically trying to give back to the kids,” Harris said. “We were in their shoes back in the day. Just to give return to them, I know it means the world to them, and it means the world to us to be out here.”
