Meadowbrook, Phillips beat Petersburg 40-28

Petersburg never saw it coming.

After running a spread offense for much of the season Meadowbrook went back to its trademark Wing-T against the Crimson Wave.

The switch worked as the Monarchs rode the misdirection offense to a 40-28 victory over host Petersburg on Friday night.

“The kids were in a good rhythm running the ball,” Meadowbrook coach Bill Bowles said. “We came out in a Wing-T and they weren’t ready for it. The misdirection opened things up so we could throw the ball.”

Sophomore running back Donico Phillips rushed for three touchdowns (2, 6 and 2 yards) and caught one (6 yards) for the Monarchs, ranked third in the DigitalSports Top 10. Phillips finished with 106 yards rushing on 30 carries and caught three balls for 42 yards.

“He is another kid who is going to get better and better,” Bowles said. “If you give him some blocking he is going to find the cracks.”

Meadowbrook quarterback Desmond Coble was 10 of 19 for 188 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 85 yards on eight carries.

Down 14-8 after the first quarter, the Monarchs scored 26 unanswered points in the second quater to pull away and never trail again.

Petersburg coach Mike Scott had prepared his team all week to face the spread offense after watching film on Meadowbrook (1-1 Central District, 4-1).

“We were undisciplined on defense tonight,” Scott said. “But that undisciplined came from Bill Bowles doing a good job of coaching the Wing-T. We were just not prepared.”

The Crimson Wave offense managed only 107 total yards against a strong Meadowbrook defense. Demondre Woodson was a bright spot rushing for two touchdowns and 56 yards on 10 carries.

Petersburg (1-1, 4-1) punted on their first possession but recovered a fumble on the punt. On the next play Woodson went 37 yards for a touchdown and the Crimson Wave made it 8-0 on quarterback Raliek Green‘s two-point conversion run.

Meadowbrook got on the board with a punt block that rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety and tied the score on a 2-yard TD run by Phillips with 1:28 left in the first quarter. Coble’s pass attempt on the two-point conversion fell incomplete.

On the ensuing kickoff Petersburg’s Damian McLauglin took the kick 85 yards for a touchdown and a 14-8 advantage.

“They had a big kickoff return, we were kind of shaky, but we just had to pick it up” Phillips said.

That would be the Crimson Wave’s final lead as the Monarchs exploded in the second quarter with a Phillips 6-yard touchdown run, a 24-yard touchdown catch by Rodney Ragin, a 22-yard touchdown catch by Kevon Wright and another Phillips 2-yard touchdown run.

In the second half, Meadowbrook was held to only Phillips’ 6-yard TD reception from Coble in the third quarter.

“We made some adjustments in the second half and gave up only one touchdown,” Scott said.

Woodson scored his second touchdown on a 7-yard run in the third and backup quarterback Eric Magruder found the end zone also on a 7-yard run in the fourth but the lead was already to great for a late rally.

Wright recorded two interceptions for the Monarchs and Coble had one.

Meadowbrook’s greatest struggles came in their special teams and kicking game. The Monarchs missed two extra points, fumbled on a punt return, gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown and had two punt snaps go past the punter.

But Bowles will take the victory after the Monarchs dropped their first game of the season last week against Thomas Dale.

“This was big, huge,” Bowles said. “If we dropped this one we might as well have hung it up.”
