The William Lawson Jr. Midseason Classic is back for another run.

After a sellout crowd that turned away patrons in 2009, the five-game invitational returns again with heavy hitters and interesting matchups.

The nightcap is the biggie, Benedictine, the state private-school power, heads into Petersburg to face the Crimson Wave, ranked No. 1 in the DigitalSports Top 10 and the latest state Group AAA poll.

That game is set to begin at 8 p.m., but four more games precede it, all at Petersburg High.

Kestrel Heights out of Durham, N.C., faces Evangel Christian and terrific 6-8 junior Kion Brown to kick things off at noon.

Then Group AA power Greensville takes on the Central District, Group AAA member Matoaca.

At 4 p.m., another Group AA power, Brunswick, led by former NBA player and alum Bryant Stith will face Meadowbrook, a state tournament hopeful in Group AAA, ranked sixth in the DigitalSports Top 10.

The Monarchs will host Petersburg on Friday, the day before Marques Carter‘s event.

Then at 6 p.m., Wake Forest-bound Travis McKie will lead John Marshall, No. 5 in the DS Top 10, against KIMA of Washington, D.C., who boast George Mason recruit Jonathan Arledge.

Tickets for the Carter Creates Classic are $10. Go to www.williamlawsonclassic.com for more information.

“I’m extremely excited about the Classic this year,” Carter said. “I think this one will be better than last year’s event. I’m pretty excited about an overall great day of basketball.”
