Offensive POW – Sept. 17

Desmond Coble,
Meadowbrook Monarchs

Position:
Quarterback/Safety

Year:
Junior             Age:
16

Performance:
Coble had 227 yards passing, including a 65-yard TD pass with about 40 seconds left to Chris Carter, leading top-ranked Meadowbrook to a 20-13 victory over No. 2 Hermitage. Coble also had 72 yards rushing and had an interception to end the contest.

Game winner: “It was crazy. It was second down and we needed a big play. I just threw him the ball. He was wide open. I didn’t even expect him to be there that open.”

Three sports: Coble plays basketball in the winter and is a centerfielder for the baseball team in the spring. He was injured last winter, so didn’t play though he made the varsity team. He hit .347 in baseball.

Difference from freshman to now:
“I really didn’t know how to read a defense like I do now. I’ve become a better leader on teh team and I’ve grew up a lot. Getting older, getting wiser.”

Invite any
three people to dinner:
“My grandmother [Margaret Whitted], Michael Jordan and Jerome Bettis. The Pittsburgh Steelers are my favorite football team. Jordan was the greatest of all time around his era. That’s what I want to be in football.”

Funniest
teammate:
“It would have to be between Chris Carter and Jacaurey Thomas. Chris is just a real big goofball. Jacaurey is a young player and really, really goofy.”

On coach Bill Bowles excitement after the win:
“It was surprising to me. He’s a very serious man. To see that happen, made me happy.”

Are you a gamer?:
“I like playing the XBox 360. Madden is my favorite. I play a lot of other sports games.”

Favorite class:
“Chemistry.”

Goals:
“Taking it one step at a time. Our goal is a state championship. Stay focused. We need to get a lot better on offense and defense. Come out and play every Friday. Don’t take anybody for granted.”
